Ibidem Volume 3 and Aziz & Beyond by P. Howard Lyons
<"img src="images/aziz.jpg" width="170" height="216" align="right" border="0">At
long last, the third and final volume of the magic magazine that was so
underground, it's just now coming up for air. From 1963-1979 Howard Lyons'
Ibidem was so far ahead of the pack in innovative card magic, we're still
catching up to it. Reprinted in this jumbo volume are the final eight
issues plus an unpublished issue of material from "crazy" Tom Ransom.
Tossed in for good measure is Howard Lyons' long-anticipated avant-garde
magazine, Aziz, which Howard had begun assembling a few years before his
death with the intentions that it would replace Ibidem. Unfortunately,
Howard didn't live long enough to get Aziz out, but the material collected
for the first issue survived, and it makes up the first section of Aziz
& Beyond . Also included is additional material by Howard and others,
gathered from his files and other sources, which might not have been included
were it not for Max Maven having done such an extraordinary job of unearthing,
editing, interpreting and organizing this material. Ibidem 3 and Aziz
& Beyond contain contributions by: Howard Lyons, Mel Stover, Peter Duffie,
Allan Slaight, Ken Beale, Phil Goldstein, Robert E. Neale, Paul Swinford,
J.K. Hartman, Ron Wohl and many others. Over 140 pages of unpublished
material, 360 pages in total plus 12 in full color. Hardbound.

Illogical
Dribble Force by Justin Higham
There
is, of course, illogicality and illogicality. Actions which are illogical
from an effect viewpoint are, naturally, to be shunned. But there are
certain moves which, although illogical or discrepant, pass by unnoticed.
Examples include the Tenkai Optical Revolve, Through-the-Fist Turnover,
Flushtration Count, Olram Subtlety, So-Simple Force, and Jay Ose False
Cut. In this treatise on the Illogical Dribble Force, Justin Higham explains
a method for forcing one or more cards from either a face-down or face-up
deck. Although illogical, the move is easy, casual, and visually deceptive,
and can be done in an instant with no prior setup. Contents include: The

Works Volume 1 by Rand Woodbury
Illusions,
Ideas & Inspiration If you're searching for brand-new illusion concepts,
look no further than Rand Woodbury's Illusionworks series of books.
Volume One features fifty-three illusions, including Torturtina, Shadow
Dancer, and Body Transformer explained with the aid of understandable
explanations, computerized illustrations and construction dimensions.
Excerpt from the Introduction: Where do you start one of these things?
I've never had to write anything like this before. There was that one
job application and that police report. Well, nevermind. Why does this
book exist? Basically, it's because I haven't seen this kind of book
on illusions in any magic shop; a book with just original ideas or illusionist.
I have a few books on the subject of large stage illusions and Jarret,
by Jim Steinmeyer has to be my favorite. I thought it would be cool
to have a sort of modern "Jarrett" type book containing new and modern
material. And for the record: I'm not comparing myself to genius that
was Guy Jarrett or the genius that is Jim Steinmeyer. I do thing Guy
Jarrett might have gotten a kick out of this book and probably even
swore a bit. Pages 182 - Softbound

The Illustrated History Of Magic by Milbourne and Maurine Christopher
An
updated edition of the classic history of magic - from sorcerer-priests
in ancient Egypt to such modern conjurers as Houdini, David Copperfield,
and David Blaine. Set off on a magical history tour with Milbourne Christopher's
classic Illustrated History of Magic. Follow the fascinating stories
of the world's greatest conjurers, from sorcerer-priests in ancient
Egypt, The Great Herrmann, Harry Kellar, Chung Ling Soo, Houdini, to
modern miracle workers like David Copperfield, Siegfried and Roy, and
David Blaine. Filled with fantastic illustrations—poster art, photographs,
illusion diagrams—this book is a feast for anyone interested in the
conjuring arts. "Knowing my passion for magic history, people often
ask me how they can learn about the origins of the art. I always refer
them to this work, without hesitation, as the best source on the topic."
- from the Foreword by David Copperfield "A glowing, fascinating account
of this ancient art. Christopher has woven a spell and offered the reader
a front-row seat for the great mysteries and the famous mystifiers.
It's pure magic." - Jim Steinmeyer, author of 'Hiding the Elephant'
and 'The Glorious Deception' "This mesmerizing, intelligent history
sweeps from the earliest known image of a conjuring feat - an Egyptian
wall painting made around 2500 B.C. - to the feats of that renowned
escapologist Harry Houdini." - Publishers Weekly "Lives up to Copperfield's
recommendation as 'the best source on the topic'." - Library Journal
Milbourne Christopher played a crucial role in reviving magic's appeal
for audiences in America and Europe, practicing his craft on TV and
Broadway. An expert and author on magic, extrasensory perception, and
the hereafter, Christopher lectured at colleges and universities and
was at the forefront of the magic world from the 1950s until his death,
in 1984. Maurine Christopher, his widow, is keeping his good work alive
by continuing to update The Illustrated History of Magic. Foreword by
David Copperfield! Contains B&W photos and illustrations. Plus 8 full
color pages of performance posters featuring: Houdini, Blackstone, Thurston
and more! Pages 484

Imagine
by Rick Maue
Imagine. A very simple word, and yet, such a powerful one. Just
Imagine that a volunteer from the audience can merely think of any item
from a list that has been entirely created by the rest of the audience.
She concentrates upon her selection as the you run through all of the
named possibilities. When you get to the end of the list, you will be
able to tell the volunteer exactly what she is thinking. Just Imagine
that a person can merely think of any one of the five standard ESP symbols—and
you will be able to tell them which one. And all of this (and more)
can be accomplished on the spot. Nothing ever needs to be written. There
is no advance preparation. No secret assistants. No gimmicks. No forcing.
No pumping. No equivoque. And everything can be done without the performer
ever touching anything—so there is obviously no sleight-of-hand. Simply
put, everything here can look, and feel, like real mind reading. And
everything can be done 100% impromptu. But, there is a catch… If you
are the type of person that often reads something that is a bit different,
and immediately believes that it will never work, then this manuscript
will not be worthwhile for you. The material found between these covers
is unusual, powerful, and certainly not for everyone. So be forewarned.

Impish Thoughts and Meaningful Magic Kenton Knepper
Here
is a new collection of how Kenton makes miracles. Simple props and tools
become memorable miracles. After each unusual effect and method is a
"Lesson". These are short and sweet reminders of the principles and
concepts at work behind each effect. The "lessons" will get you rethinking
what you do and how you do it. Many treasures in each of these short
paragraphs following the effects. If you have seen what Kenton does
with an Imp Bottle in the spectator's hand - that is finally in here
- and fully explained for the first time ever. This alone is worth the
price of the manuscript in the opinion of many who have seen it. Very
commercial, exciting and memorable work... with an Imp Bottle no less!
There are daring favorites which a select few have seen Kenton perform
live. These have also made their way on to television in many countries.
You will find in full expanded explanation and exposure "The Love Force",
"Mojo Grow Bag" and "A Miracle For Those Who Dare". Kenton realized
that he needed to more fully explain these concepts and effects so other
performers could grasp them easily and perform them. You will find new
information, new illustrations and the latest work on these favorites.
"Drawn Together" is a new bit you'll have a load of fun doing. Two spectators
stand next to each other and try to force one another off balance. When
they remain balanced, the performer states this is due to an unusual
connection between them. He makes them stand apart, but says that "each
will subconsciously reach out to each other". The audience laughs for
as the performer speaks, the spectators do just as he says. Even the
spectators are amazed by this event. This manuscript will get you to
reconsider old bits and props you have dismissed, while giving you valuable
lessons and insights that can be applied to all that you do. Other effects
and methods are included, each with their own unique spin on performance
and principle. If you care about performing more than just learning
tricks, this is a manuscript you will find very useful and inspiring.
If tricks are all you wish, then get ready for some very different tricks
- the kind that make you and your audiences think about what they have
seen for a long time to come. OVER 30 FULL SIZE PAGES.

The
Indescribable Phenomenon by Barry H. Wiley
She was one of the most famous and successful mediums and mentalists
of the twentieth century. She fooled the best minds of her time. She
was, in the words of J. N. Maskelyne... "...a fascinating little blonde."
After devoting twenty-eight years of research to her, Barry Wiley has
written a biography that is both highly entertaining and thoroughly
documented, weaving a story that includes a cast of magicians, mind
readers, mediums, scientists, private detectives, frauds, suicides and
murderous autopsies. It is a chapter of magic's history not to be missed.
On March 31, 1848, a new religion called Spiritualism was born. Less
than three years later saw another birth, that of Ann Eliza Heathman
to a simple cobbler in Southington, Ohio. While still a child, Annie
was told she was a medium for the spirits of the dead, and from that
point on she never looked back. Her ability to make people believe she
could summon the shades of the departed brought her to the attention
of H. Melville Fay, an unscrupulous fraudulent medium (or exposer of
fraudulent mediums--whichever was paying best at the time). Under his
guidance, Annie conquered America and then Europe, becoming Anna Eva
Fay, the girl who baffled William Crookes, one of the most respected
scientists of the age. When the star of Spiritualism finally waned,
Anna adapted, conjuring thoughts, rather than ghosts, from the minds
of theater audiences, to become one of the most famous and successful
stage mentalists of the twentieth century. Barry Wiley has spent twenty-eight
years researching the astonishing life and career of Anna Eva Fay, and
chronicles it with the touch of an experienced storyteller, while fully
documenting his tale, the nature of which might otherwise be doubted.
Along the way, he uncovers facts about other famous mediums and mystery
performers of the heyday of Spiritualism, including the story behind
how Washington Irving Bishop, one of America's greatest "muscle readers",
got the nickname "petticoat Bishop", and how Charles H. Foster, the
famous billet-reading medium, met a face-to-face challenge from Bishop
on a New York stage and beat him in a battle of dueling frauds. Wiley
trots out long-buried facts, explodes fables, and leads the reader through
the exploits of a cast of characters worthy of Dickens. From the underbelly
of Spiritualism to the peak of the world's stages, he follows Anna Eva
Fay and a lifetime of strange acquaintances. She was a celebrity, an
enemy of J. N. Maskelyne, a close friend of Houdini, Kellar and Karl
Germain, and one of the last century's greatest mind-readers. She was
"The Indescribable Phenomenon" and this is her story. A quality hardcover,
454 pages, printed on coated paper, including two sections of color
plates.

Inside-Out by Christopher Taylor
The effects in this book have been designed form the inside out.
In each case, Christopher began with some concept drawn from nature
or metaphysics that he was strongly attached to. Then, like a magnet
invisibly organizing iron filings, the concept acted as a nucleus around
which technique, method, and devices gathered to produce the form of
the effect. In this manuscript, Christopher applied this empirical perspective
to the classic effects of magic and found that many of them expressed
principles found in nature or archetypal ideas from the human imagination.
This Inside-Out perspective allows the performer to get deep into the
heart of an effect, and truly understand it. Once that is achieved the
performer can truly amaze the audience with effects that appear to be
a natural extension of the performer's mind and body. Inside-Out is
certainly not the only perspective that can be applied to finding/creating
magic and mental effects. Simply looking or a cool way of showing off
one's dexterity with coins or cards can lead to entertaining and recognizable
magic. What adopting the Inside-Out perspective can do is add another
dimension to our enjoyment of the magic of nature and the nature of
magic. Features Included: Introduction: The Inside-Out Perspective.
Getting There and the Double-Writing Wallet: Cognitive geography and
way finding Being There, a Special Pen and a Billet Index: An archetypal
dream. Three Minds, One Thought and the Thought Recorder Deck: Mental
telepathy with a deck of cards. Room 7 and the Pocket Printing Press:

I’ll just let you absorb this collection of weird and wonderful magic,
plucked directly from inside the head of Donny Orbit!" - DAVE FORREST

Intercept by Harvey Berg
Harvey
cemented his reputation with this effect. He did it for magician after
magician, including top cardmen, at a table at a major convention. None
of them had a clue what was happening! EFFECT: With no setup, you hand
a spectator a deck (which can be borrowed on the spot) to shuffle and
mentally select one card. The entire selection process is made in the
spectator's hands! You shuffle and spread the cards slowly to "intercept
a telepathic message" when the spectator makes eye contact with the
thought-of card. You reveal the card in a most dramatic way. Reactions
you get are not "how did you do that?" but more like "That's Impossible!
It just didn't happen!" "I did the exact same effect over 15 times at
a Christmas function with the same people watching over and over and
still got a tremendous response." - Ron Hudspeth "Your work is creative
and stimulating" - Barrie Richardson

It's a Lu Lu by Docc Hilford
A perfect startling new way to read minds! Imagine working high
end night clubs with a deck of cards and a handkerchief. And getting
paid good money for ten minutes of amazing mentalistic entertainment.
That is exactly what Docc Hilford does with his blindfold act, It's
a Lu Lu! And now you can do it too. Effect: Two spectators shuffle a
full deck of cards. The performer asks a woman to help him by having
three people select a card each. These are of course, free selections,
as the performer doesn't even see who participates. The cards are shown
to others in the crowd, but not tho the performer. The cards are returned
to the deck and the woman cuts the deck repeatedly. Now the performer
is blindfolded with an ungimmicked blindfold, legitimately blinded.
Cards are held up one at a time and discarded. But when the audience
sees a selected card, they all "THINK" the word "STOP" and the performer
announces that the card held is one that was selected. Although he has
not seen the card and the deck has been out of his hands for the selections
and returns, he finds the selected cards -- apparently by thought alone!
But that's not all! While the woman holds up cards, the performer announces
the final selection, then reveals the name of the spectator who chose
it and finally names the chosen card!! This is done while the cards
are still in the woman's hands. Truly Unbelievable!! This can be done
in a living room for friends or on a dance floor of a night club. All
of Docc's night club patter is included for you to use as well. Important
Features: The blindfold is REAL - no peeking No stooges, cueing, or
set-ups The spectators shuffle the cards The performer doesn't touch
the cards for the selections or returns. The performer never sees who
selected the cards.\ The helper still holds the cards when the last
spectator and the final card is named. There's plenty of built in comedy
bits! Always ready -- no pre-show work required. Can be prepared with
any standard deck Two different handlings are explained. The full night
club version is included. Can be performed close-up or walk around.
Docc has given every nuance and gesture. He's included the hokes, lines,
and bits of business necessary for mentalism work in a night club setting.
More importantly, Docc discusses his personal experiences of what a
night club audience expects and how to deliver it to them. If you want
to work night clubs, or to just amaze your friends, this routine is
for you. This is more than just a trick, it is a ten minute routine!

It's Fun To Be Fooled - Horace Goldin
In his day, Horace Goldin was the world's greatest living magician.
He made stage history with some of his amazing inventions, and he mystified
more people of note than any other illusionist. The British Royal Family
had a particular admiration for Goldin's skill. By Royal Command he
played four times before King Edward VII, earning the name Royal Illusionist.
During his long and distinguished career, Goldin also appeared before
the Kings of Saxony, Portugal and Sweden, Presidents Harding and Wilson
and the King of Siam. The full stories of Horace Goldin's greatest tricks,
particularly the Indian Rope Trick and Sawing A Woman In Half are truly
fascinating. During his forty-eight years on the stage, Goldin traveled
extensively. The stories he relates of American gangsters, of great
publicity stunts in the U.S. and England are amazing. His reminiscences
are filled with humor, excitement and shrewd comment. They also make
it easy to understand why Horace Goldin was one of the outstanding figures
in the world of Magic. This new edition includes two chapters which
did not appear in the original edition. Hard cover; Profusely illustrated.

The Jagged Edge by Docc Hilford
The
Famous author, creator and billet worker, Al Mann said, "You rattled
me with your Jagged Edge billet test. It is great and original. I only
wish I had it when I wrote The Purloined Thought." Docc Hilford has
taken the simplistic course of the Center Tear and given it a new direction.
The Jagged Edge allows the Mentalist to know EVERYTHING that is written
on a list. Effect Ten people are asked to think of a past president.
Each person must think of a different president. To facilitate this,
a small pad of paper passed among the participants. Checking to make
certain that their chosen president has not been listed, each person
writes the name that they have in mind. If the name is already on the
list, the participant has to select a different name. When all ten people
have chosen a name, a new person looks over the list and circles one
name. The written list is no longer needed so one of the spectators
removes the sheet and folds it into quarters. The pad is tossed aside.
The mentalist tears the folded paper and throws it away; after all,
it was needed only to make certain that no names were duplicated. THE
MENTALIST IS NOW ABLE TO LOOK AT EACH PERSON ON THE LIST AND REVEAL
WHAT NAME THEY HAVE IN MIND! Beyond this remarkable demonstration, the
mentalist asks a member of the audience to open a large envelope they
have been holding since before the list was made. Inside is a prediction.
It reveals that the mentalist knew the name that would be selected by
the participant that circled a name! This new billet technique is applicable
to endless presentations. In an instant, you will be able to know what
was written on the list, who wrote what and which of the list was selected.
If you ever wanted to be able to entertain a large group of people with
nothing more that a BORROWED piece of paper, now you can. Has these
important features: No switching of papers. Only one paper is used.
No carbons in the pad, or anywhere else. No peeks, glimpses or quick
looks. Any paper will work. Everything can be borrowed. No stolen center.
Perfectly logical reason for writing the thoughts. Every move is natural.
Entirely new technique. Can be used in an endless number of tricks.
Can be learned in a few minutes. Completely one-man. Can be used with
a spirit medium act. Instanly gives three pieces of information: Who
the 10 of 12 thoughts are, Who wrote what, And which thought was selected.
BONUS MATERIAL: In this manuscript, you will receive The Phantom Artist,
a clever effect by Percy Naldrett that enables you to reveal a thought
through an artistic ability. Published previously, never before has
this effect been given such a presentation. An original creation of
Docc Hilford for use with The Jagged Edge...

Jay's Journal of Anomalies (202 Pages, Illustrated Hardbound with
Dust Jacket)
From
Ricky Jay, "Ingesters of stones, stoats, and swords have long compelled
my attention. Signor Hervio Nano, the fantastic homunculus, defied conventional
taxonomy. The well-trained flea has shown sufficient rationality to
drive a chariot, impersonate Napoleon, or reenact the siege of Antwerp.
Note the enduring popularity of severing from the head its most protuberant
organ -- the nose. The Bonassus, advertised as unique, was in 1821 the
most numerous hoofed quadruped on the face of the earth. In an era rich
in examples of animal scholarship, Munito was a star. "
The multitalented Ricky Jay (sleight-of-hand artist, actor, author,
and scholar of the unusual) wrote and published a unique and beautifully
designed quarterly called Jay's Journal of Anomalies. Already coveted
collector's items, the sixteen issues are now gathered here in a complete
set, with significant new material and illustrations. A brilliant excursion
into the history of bizarre entertainments, the journal was described
in The New York Times as "beautiful and elegant...a combination of rigorous
scholarship and personal rumination."
In a delectably deadpan and winning style, Jay conveys his admiration
and affection for the offbeat that characterized his best-selling Learned
Pigs & Fireproof Women. The journal covers such subjects as dogs stealing
acts from other dogs, an anthropological hoax involving the only survivors
of a caste of ancient Aztec priests, and the ultimate diet: eating nothing
at all. Jay explains how wags since the sixteenth century have cheated
at bowling; he explores the ancient relationship between conjuring and
dentistry; and he chronicles the exploits of ceiling walkers and human
flies. Crammed full of illustrations drawn from the author's massive
personal archives, Jay's Journal of Anomalies will baffle, instruct,
and, above all, delight.

John Calvert: Magic and Adventures Around the World by William V.
Rauscher
Only a dedicated magic buff could have so thoroughly researched and
written a book recounting John Calvert's breath-taking illusions onstage,
his incredible daredevil feats, and his many real-life escapes from
death. In this compelling narrative and with three hundred photographs,
William V. Rauscher describes the magic career that led to record-breaking
engagements on Broadway and exciting adventures around the world. Calvert
has captivated audiences in the great cities of five continents. Rauscher
tells of the successful movie career, often touched by Calvert's own
magical good fortune, where he started in many popular films and went
on to succeed in most of the facets of the motion picture industry.
The author relates hair-rasing exploits of Calvert in his private airliners,
in which he transported his cast and the props and sets of his glittering
stage productions; and of Calvert at sea, where he encountered typhoons
in the Pacific, pirates off the coast of China, gunboats in the Straits
of Taiwan, and the loss of three great yachts, including the gallant
sailing vessl Sea Fox. After his speedboat sank off the coast of Borneo,
the magician swam for nearly sixteen hours in waters infested with sea
snakes, sharks, and Portuguese men-of-war until he was picked up by
a native fisherman. Rauscher has gathered a remarkable collection of
photograhphs chronicling Calvert's life from his childhood in New Trenton,
Indiana, through most of his unique experiences. The illustrations enchance
this thrilling and inspiring saga about an extraordinary man whose daring,
iimagination, and faith have propelled and sustained him through a long
life of adventure in a magical aura where success and survival clearly
have triumphed. "John Calvert: Magic and Adventures Around the
World" contains details of a story that continues today with all
the glamour and mystique that have followed Calvert through five decades.
