Complete Jarrett by Guy E. Jarrett & Jim Steinmeyer

Written By Guy E. Jarrett and Jim Steinmeyer with an Introduction by John A. McKinven In 1981, Jim Steinmeyer produced Jarrett, but that was only part of the story... The Complete Jarrett is a spectacular new edition of the infamous Jarrett Magic, the controversial 1936 text on stage illusions. Guy Jarrett had constructed illusions for Thurston, for leading Broadway shows, sideshows and world's fairs. He thought a lot of magic could be better and put his secrets and philosophies in his own hand-printed text, and he changed magic forever. The secrets were astonishing, the stories were insightful, and the book became famous as one of the best reads in magic-alternately hilarious, biting and just plain honest. For many decades the book was a highly-sought rarity. The Complete Jarrett is a completely new edition, reproducing every page of Jarrett's original work with over 250 photos and drawings, including many new diagrams for this edition. For the first time, Jim Steinmeyer has included newly discovered historical information on Jarrett, his Broadway shows, feature illusions and the secrets of his remarkable magic. It's a beautiful publication and an important, fascinating look at the art. The Complete Jarrett is a post-graduate course in magic, taught by magic's one-of-a-kind genius, Guy Jarrett. Hardbound, 288 Pages with Silver Stamped Cover

EQUILATERAL - Innovative Illusion Solutions for Modern Illusionists by J C Sum
This is J C's third illusion book and it contains new creative illusions and innovation design solutions for popular illusion plots. As with all of J C’s written work, ‘Equilateral’ features carefully thought out designs, methodologies and presentation plots that take into consideration motivation, logic and credibility in the performance of illusion. There are no conceptual illusions, ideas or notions detailed in the book; only practical and prototyped illusions that can be built. Two elements that makes this book different from his previous work is the maturity and increased sophistication in his illusion designs with more focus on visual ‘Las Vegas-style’ grand illusions. The highlights of the book are J C’s original car appearance and a self-contained surrounded motorcycle production; either one which is worth the price of the book. "J C Sum has done it again. For those familiar with his previous books and illusions, you know you can expect detailed and practical illusion designs. For those who are reading Equilateral as their first book from J C, you will find within these pages illusions that actually exist in a performing magician’s arsenal. There are no theories, ideas, dreams or wishes here. Only illusions that J C has prototyped, built and performed for his audiences, grace these pages. J C Sum is known as The Thinking Man’s Magician. For those that need to think about the next addition to their show… rest assured, J C has already done that for you." Foundations : The Art of Staging Magic by Eberhard Riese
Although the art of magic does not only consist of tricks and technique, roughly 99% of all magic books mainly deal with these topics. "New" tricks, techniques and moves, those seen by the lay audience, upstage all the other, behind the scenes, backstage elements, which are equally if not more important to a successful presentation. And those important foundations are exactly what the current new publication of the German Sic! Publishing company sets forth. Eberhard Riese, director of many successful magic acts, recipient of the 2006 Creative Fellowship of The Academy of Magical Arts and for many years editor of the German magic magazine "MAGIE", puts his cards on the table: expounding his experience and his knowledge of all the "other" aspects of the creation and development of a magic act. Beginning with the finding of an idea, he describes everything which is important: the designing of a stage figure, the equipment, the props and effects, the selection of music (or patter), the focus and plot of a presentation and much more. Numerous hints and tips which are really helpful to any artist aspiring to perform at their best! Many examples are given from Riese's work in Stuttgart, so that one obtains a view into the working techniques used in the creation of many successful magic acts, among others those from Roxanne, Peggy Fox, Topas, Franklin, ChaPeau, Nils Bennett, Wave, Simon Pierro, Andy Haeussler, Dr. Marrax and other successful European magicians and Allied Arts performers, whose presentations were developed or improved with the techniques described in this book. The book is a basic work in which no tricks are explained, but however, it contains everything you have to know for the magic and performing arts. FOUNDATIONS is a book about the development and composition of a magic act. 180 pages, hard bound, with a foreword by Jim Steinmeyer, numerous photos completely in color. Excerpt from the Book: "Why This Book?" "This book is most of all addressed to magicians who have already gained some practical experience as illusionists and wish to tackle a new act. It is intended to show them a possible route to an original, unusual magic routine. Only one route, mark you, and not the only one. Namely the route we have been following for years quite successfully in Stuttgart. I would like to pass others still so they can follow the same path - or any other! These are the goals supported by this book." Excerpt from Jim Steinmeyer's foreword: "Something strange has been happening to Stuttgart. I first became aware of it years ago, when it became obvious to me, from many thousands of miles away, that this German city was turning out magicians - great magicians, creative magicians, innovative magicians - at a surprising rate. Perhaps it was something in the water? magicians from all around Germany were attracted there, made their pilgrimage and, like Lourdes, something miraculous was happening. It wasn't until I had a chance to talk to Topas and Nils Bennett that I fully understood. It wasn't "something", it was "someone", Eberhard Riese. here was the catalyst, the inspiration and teacher to great magicians. When I finally met "Ebs", the founder of the Stuttgart group, it was hard to believe that this quiet, modest man was really capable of such alchemy. And then I heard him talk about magic. (...) I believe that Eberhard Riese's careful work in magic is beckoning to us. Through this text, this wizard of Stuttgart will have the pleasure of reaching many more serious students. They will see him, and have an opportunity to make the most of their own efforts: creative, determined, and innovative." Pages 180 - Hardbound

Eric's own creativity often found its way into these creations as they slowly took shape in his Northampton workshop. For this book, Eric has selected sixty effects that range from mental magic, club and cabaret tricks, escapes, close-up and stage illusions. Some were first published in scarce magazines but most have never appeared in print. Told here is the true story of the creation of Harbin's legendary Zig-Zag Girl illusion. Because of Eric's close association with these routines, besides writing and illustrating them, he was able to include many important construction details and presentational points. Eric wanted this to be more than just a book of tricks so he has woven throughout the text a very personalized biography of his dear friend. To assist in this, The American Museum of Magic kindly lent Eric Harbin's original scrapbooks from which we were able to reproduce numerous rare photographs that trace Harbin's career from his early days as Ned Williams in South Africa to his unprecedented fame in England and around the world. Complementing Eric's text is a Publisher's Note by Mike Caveney, a Foreword by Robert Lund, an Introduction by John Fisher and a final chapter by Alan Shaxon.

Glorious Decpection aka Chung Ling Soo by Jim Steinmeyer
In a biography woven from equal parts enchantment and mystery, Jim Steinmeyer unveils the secrets behind the most enigmatic performer in the history of stage magic, Chung Ling Soo, the “Marvelous Chinese Conjurer”—a magician whose daring made his contemporary Houdini seem like the boy next door. Soo’s infamous and suspicious onstage death in 1918 mystified his fellow magicians: he was shot during a performance of “Defying the Bullets,” in which he attempted to catch marked bullets on a porcelain plate. When Soo died, his deceptions began to unravel. It was discovered that he was not Chinese but a fifty-eight-year-old American named William Ellsworth Robinson, a former magicians’ assistant and the husband of Olive Robinson. But even William Robinson was not who he appeared to be, for he had kept a second family with a mistress in a fashionable home near London. Here is a look at the rough-and-tumble world of turn-of-the-century entertainments, the West’s discovery of Oriental culture, and Soo's strange descent into secrecy as he rose to stardom—written by the foremost chronicler of magic’s history and culture. Due to the scandals surrounding Robinson’s death, this is the first time his full story has ever been told. Photographs are included.

Volume One features fifty-three illusions, including Torturtina, Shadow Dancer, and Body Transformer explained with the aid of understandable explanations, computerized illustrations and construction dimensions. Excerpt from the Introduction: Where do you start one of these things? I've never had to write anything like this before. There was that one job application and that police report. Well, nevermind. Why does this book exist? Basically, it's because I haven't seen this kind of book on illusions in any magic shop; a book with just original ideas or illusionist. I have a few books on the subject of large stage illusions and Jarret, by Jim Steinmeyer has to be my favorite. I thought it would be cool to have a sort of modern "Jarrett" type book containing new and modern material. And for the record: I'm not comparing myself to genius that was Guy Jarrett or the genius that is Jim Steinmeyer. I do thing Guy Jarrett might have gotten a kick out of this book and probably even swore a bit. Pages 182 - Softbound

    Secrets of Magnet Girl Explained

Further secrets from the incredible act of Lulu Hurst finally revealed! Lulu Hurst, known as The Georgia Magnet, The Electric Girl, The Georgia Wonder, etc. created a veritable sensation four generations ago by a series of feats which seemed to set the law of gravitation at defiance. Lulu could control gravity and neutralize force - or so it seemed. No one could budge her or lift any object she touched, unless she willed it. When Lulu held on end of a billiard cue, she could effortlessly pull or push a group of men holding the other end, no matter how hard they resisted. Objects would be drawn irresistibly to her when she held her hands over them, even those that would not be attracted to a magnet, such as a straw hat. In Secrets of the Magnetic Girl Explained, additional tests and demonstrations of the above caliber are explained from the original Cassiers Magazine article in 1895!

Two Lectures on Theatrical Illusion by Jim Steinmeyer

This new edition combines two of Jim Steinmeyer's most sought-after titles: Discovering Invisibility and The Science Behind The Ghost. Originally published in 1999 in an edition of only 150 copies, The Science Behind The Ghost is a history of Pepper's Ghost. It explains the variations, angles and discoveries which were responsible for this famous illusion. The book contains a complete explanation of the secrets involved and how they were evolved by different inventors through the years, ending with a discussion of how Pepper's Ghost was used in Disney's famous attractions. Discovering Invisibility was published earlier this year in an edition of 150 copies and quickly became unavailable. It is a complete discussion of how mirrors came to be used in stage illusions and the important and little-known secrets behind these effects. The two books have now been published in this one volume. A fascinating history of mirror illusions, from the famous ghosts that walked the stage in London to the secrets used by magicians throughout the 20th Century. Included are full illustrations of the effects and principles, historical drawings, diagrams and bibliographies. 189 pages. Spiral bound.

    Dagger Chest - Folding
Performer displays a square wooden chest with front and back openings, which the audience can see completely through. The chest is put around a spectator's head, and panels used to close the back and front, effectively trapping the head in the chest. Several daggers are now pushed through slots on the sides of the chest. Apparently they penetrate right through the head! The front panel is now lifted away. The inside of the chest is seen to be crisscrossed with daggers. There seems to be no room to conceal anything between the dagger blades. And the spectator's head has completely vanished. The front panel is now reinserted, and the daggers removed. Panels are then lifted away to reveal the spectator's head completely unharmed. The chest is pulled off the head, and the blind fold removed. This is one of the most popular illusions of all times. Our folding model collapses to a small compact size that can be carried in a briefcase. It can be erected in less than two minutes into a rigid form, which does not fall to pieces under normal handling. And you can dismantle it in a jiffy. Another special feature of our Dagger Chest is that you can use it with any spectator from the audience. The assistant has absolutely no part to play in the working. The spring hinged pieces open automatically when the daggers are inserted, and closed silently when the daggers are removed. By using a spectator from the audience (blindfolded so that they do not see the internal working), you greatly enhance the effect.
